One of the oldest Indian cities, Hyderabad owes much of its heritage and creative culture to the era of the Nizams. Known for famous architectural structures like the Charminar, Golconda Fort, and the Qutb Shahi Tombs, the city offers a much more varied mix of experiences for those who care to look deeper.

After looking at unusual things to do in other Indian cities here are 11 things to do in Hyderabad that are out of the ordinary:

1. Sudha Car Museum

While the Salar Jung Museum may be a favourite of history buffs, the Sudha Car Museum is also a must-see. The only museum in the world exclusively showcasing handmade automobiles, its collection includes all kinds of novelty cycles, bikes, buses, and cars.

2. Durgam Cheruvu

Literally meaning “secret lake” this serene and picturesque lake is an ideal place to relax. Lying between Jubilee Hills and Madhapur, it is hidden by the surrounding rocks. It also has boating facilities.

3. Rock Walks

Sitting on the Deccan Plateau, Hyderabad has numerous stunning natural rock formations. At over 2,500 million years old, these fascinating formations, with their seemingly impossible shapes and sized are a sight to behold.

4. Spanish Mosque

On Begumpet Road lies another of Hyderabad’s hidden gems. Known as the “Spanish Mosque,” this lovely single storey mosque was built in 1906. According to legend, a courtier, Iqbal ud Dowla, visited Europ and was inspired to build this “Moorish style’ mosque.

5. Lamakaan

This open cultural space in Banjara Hills is a centre for all kinds of art. It has regular plays, auditions, comedy events, debates, and much more happening every day. They also serve delicious chai and samosas!

6. Sunday Book Bazaar at Abdis

When the shutters close on the shop in Abids on Saturday, the area transforms into a bustling book bazaar made up of small second-hand bookstalls. From the latest bestsellers, self-improvement books, coffee table books, to textbooks of medicine, engineering, and management you will find books on almost every topic under the sun here all at dirt cheap prices, starting at just ₹20.

7. Heritage Walks

Heritage Walks are not just for tourists. They also provide a unique way for people to experience their own city. Hyderabad, with its many heritage sites, is a perfect place for this. Numerous groups offer guided weekend walk.

8. Go Karting at the Airport

The Go Karting tracks of Runway 9 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is one of the most fun things to do in the city. It is spread across 5 acres and also includes activities like rock climbing, roller skating, and laser tag. The tracks are open until 3 a.m.

9. The Deer Park

The Mahavir Harina Vanasthali Deer Park is one of the most under-rated places in the city. A delight to visit, it is located near Vanasthalipura. It is one of the largest green spaces in the city and makes for an excellent day out.

10. Famous Ice Cream

Hyderabad has tones of famous eateries. Its iconic biryani can be found at places like Café Bahar, Paradise Restaurant, or the Grand Hotel, but Famous Ice Cream, established 60 years ago, has some of the best seasonal fruit flavoured ice creams in the city. Don’t be fooled by its humble decor!

11. Laad Bazaar

This is amongst the most popular shopping areas in Hyderabad. It is best known for its bangles and traditional jewellery. Laad Bazaar has been operating since the time of the Nizams.
